Signs and Symptoms of Congenital Heart Defects.

What are the signs and symptoms of congential heart defects? Do you know, if not, here is an overview of the signs and symptoms.

In a Newborn

A newborn with congenital heart defects may have a few or no symptoms at all.

However, there are symptoms for some heart defects but this all depends on the number and type of defects, and how severe the defects are.  The defect may not be detected during a physical exam.

Severe defects can cause the following signs and symptoms:

  • Fast or difficult breathing
  • Fatigue (tiredness)
  • Cyanosis (a bluish tint to the skin, lips, and fingernails)
  • Poor feeding
  • Poor blood circulation

Congenital heart defects don’t cause chest pains or other painful symptoms

In older children
  • Fatigue with exercise or activity
  • Shortness of breath
  • A buildup of blood and fluid in the lungs
  • A buildup of fluid in the feet, ankles, and legs
