Educating, Informing and Raising Awareness of Congenital Heart Defects

Congenital Heart Defects Awareness Week, 7 - 14th February 2008

We are doing a skydive to raise funds for CHD research and vital equipment.  The money will be donated to: Fundación Española del Corazón in Spain and Tiny Tickers in the UK

  • To all who do not know what CHD stands for. It does not mean a middle aged/old person with Coronary Heart Disease. It means Congenital Heart Defect and Congenital means 'born with'.
  • Congenital Heart Defect is a defect you are born with and you have for the rest of your life. You may have open heart surgery which does not mean that you are CURED. It means it is FIXED and that you have it for the whole of your life.
  • Now there is more CHDer's surviving into adulthood like me who are known as GUCH (Grown up with Congenital Heart) but there is still a lot of babies who are being born,
  • At present there are 35 known defects and 8 out of 1000 babies are born in the world born with one or more of these conditions. Some of these include:
  • The right or left side of the heart is not completely formed - it is known as hpyoplastic heart
  • Only one ventricle is present
  • The pulmonary arter and the aorta leave from the same ventricle
  • This of the many conditions.
